Skin cancer diagnosis are frighteningly high. Are you doing everything you can to protect yourself and your family? Did you know that sun exposure causes up to 90% of visible aging and 86% of melanomas. That is a HIGH percentage!

What do you need to do? Look for a "broad spectrum" sun protection factor. Not all sunscreens are broad spectrum. Fortunately, the FDA has declared that all brands must properly label the bottles, clearly and plainly, "broad-spectrum" and "water resistant", not water-proof (water proof does not exist)! If it's not broad spectrum, it will not protect you from the UVA rays. An easy way to remember UVA and UVB is that UVA is "The Aging Rays" and UVB "The Burning Rays". Both can and do cause skin cancer.

Another tip, is to avoid the hot, peak times of the day for sun exposure. Don't work in the yard, swim, run, hike, etc, between the hours of 10-3. Plan your activities around these hours and you will dramatically reduce your sun exposure. If this is not possible, then wear a high SPF of 50 or higher, reapply every 2 hours, and wear a big hat, with UPF clothing.

Also, keep in mind that sunscreen is often not applied thoroughly or thickly enough, and it might be washed off during swimming or sweating. As a result, even the best sunscreen might be less effective than the SPF number on the bottle would lead you to believe. If you must use a spray sunscreen, be sure to rub it in for an even application. We recommend a lotion, due to the decreased risk of poor application.

The good news: Sunscreens have become more cosmetically elegant. You can wear them without feeling greasy, or heavy under your makeup on a daily basis. Advanced Aesthetics of Arkansas can help you find the right sunscreen for your skin, and one that you don't mind wearing every day!
